The Cherry Scallop Shell Moth

This region, however, is so densely forested and its black cherry, white ash, oak and beech trees comprise the state's only national forest. These are experiencing severe defoliation, crown dieback and high mortality rates due to multiple pests. According to Kevin Treese, Marienville planning team leader, “We've got a whole host of pest problems, but the cherry scallop shell (moth) is the new one, the big one. We need to take a more active role in regulation of the forest. And we need to do it before we lose the seed sources.” Suggested remedies for this dire situation include more aggressive timbering and tree planting. So far, 48,660 acres of black cherry trees have been defoliated by the cherry scallop shell moth, which is almost three times more than the 17,000 acres eaten by this moth the year before.

A Few Interesting Historical Forest County Pest-Related Facts

Created in April of 1848, from parts of Jefferson and Venango Counties, its namesake derives from the dense and plentiful forests that dominated the region. Much of the county is within the limits of the Allegheny National Forest. This county is the only one in the state of Pennsylvania created by a joint resolution of the Legislature. In 1866, Tionesta became the county seat. Two hunters, John Aylesworth and Ebenezeer Kingsley, were among the first to settle in Tionesta, where they made a living by trapping beaver and selling their pelts in nearby Brookville.

Early Settlement and Industry

The first saw mill was built in 1823; the first gristmill at Salmon Creek in 1840. Leather tanning as well was a profitable enterprise. As early as 1830, boats were constructed from Forest county lumber at Port Barnett and North Fork for the transportation of pig metal, salt and coal to markets. Cyrus Blood, a powerful and educated man who was a surveyor by trade, was one of the county’s earliest settlers. He single-handedly founded Marienville as the center for the lumber industry. In 1833 he brought his wife and five children to their log cabin forest home which was so surrounded by panthers, bears and wild cats that the children could watch them playing outside in the garden.

Early settlers and pesticides

Although farming was never a major industry in this county and even today is confined to only two percent of the countryside, it did help to sustain the early settlers. Crops included oats, onions, potatoes, and some corn. During the early 19th century, there were no chemical pesticides available and farmers relied heavily on natural means to combat, often in vain, the marauding insects, such as corn borers, that decimated their granaries and fields.

Natural methods involved using biological controls, such as introducing insect predators and relying on migratory birds to stabilize insect populations. They also planted trap crops (known as intercropping), which are more attractive to insects. These are grown to lure marauding pests away from one crop and towards another. They were generally planted alongside the main crops and were known to appeal to insects for feeding, breeding and survival.

Later in the 19th century, because there were no federal regulations concerning pesticides, their production and sales were not only experimental, but also worthless and sometimes dangerous. Unscrupulous snake-oil salesmen fraudulently profited from these bogus products, but the hard-working farmers who tilled the soil did not.
