Broadly speaking, the state of West Virginia was an ancient hunting ground for numerous native-American tribes long before the arrival of European settlers. Indigenous people were mound builders and hunters and gatherers who stored their food in granary baskets to keep them safe from insect pests. These baskets served as cupboards and substantiate that the idea that keeping food safe from pests for future use was as important in the ancient world as it is in modern times. To this day, mysterious earthen mounds survive and are blended into the modern landscape of several cities.

Wheeling

Inhabited for thousands of years by native-Americans, Colonel Ebenezer Zane founded Wheeling as a white settlement in 1769. Trade routes along the Ohio River transformed this small city into a booming frontier town that soon became known as the “gateway to the west.” In the 19th century, Wheeling became the center of the nail industry and an important hub for iron production. Wildlife, such as raccoons and deer, have been a problem in both residential and commercial spaces as well as rats mice and the Acorn Weevil, the larvae of which threaten the expansion of oak trees.

Moundsville

Named for its proximity to the ancient Grave Creek Mound constructed by the Adena Indians more than two thousand years ago, for these early indigenous people, pests, particularly the corn borer, were a constant threat to their crops of corn, squash and beans. They often resorted to classical pest control methods, such as planting additional crops in between the fields and gathering and consuming bugs as protein sources. Weirton

Located in the state’s Northern Panhandle, this is the only city in the United States that is bordered by two different states on opposite sides of town. The first frontier settlement, which was originally known as Holiday Cove, dates back to the mid 1700s. In 1793, the name was changed to Weirton in honor of Ernest Weir, who built the city’s first steel mill, Early settlers relied on folklore and ingenuity to fight invasive insect pests, such as the squash beetle and the corn borer, as well as aphids, bedbugs, flies, mosquitoes, termites and cockroaches, and rats and mice, until the mid 19th century. The 1860s marked the advent of the pesticide, Paris Green, a very poisonous green copper and arsenic compound.

Morgantown

Situated along the banks of the Monongahela River, Morgantown is the largest city in North-Central West Virginia. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 awarded this territory to the British, and Morgantown was settled in 1772 and named for its founder, Colonel Zackquill Morgan. Early settlers relied on biological insecticides, such as pyrethium powder, which is derived from chrysanthemum flowers to combat the insects that ravaged their field crops and rats and mice that destroyed their food storage granaries Migratory birds, helped to stabilize insect populations as they flew from field to devouring all types of insects.

Fairmont

Established in 1820, the introduction of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1901 transformed Fairmont into an important commercial center for the coal trade industry. Its name derives from an early resident who suggested Fairmont because the town had a beautiful view of the Monongahela River, rendering a “fair mount.” Dealing with insects like black flies, spiders, termites, bedbugs, carpenter and black ants, roaches and rodents, which require professional pest control and management, was addressed as an appeal to Mother Nature’s good will and seeking ways to create hermetically-sealed storage containers for seeds. Most were ceramic and sealed with stone covers and unbaked clay. Even as pesticides began to appear, the farmers of the remote frontier was too far away from busy urban markets.

Situated along the banks of the Oho River and originally known as Charlestown, the name was changed to Wellsburg in 1816 to avoid confusion with Charles Town in Jefferson County. Here in 1813, the state’s first glass factory was constructed. Settled about 1770, several industries, such as glass, warehouses, furniture making and mills of all kinds flourished. In modern times, the area’s oak, hickory, pine and American chestnut trees have been severely threatened by the prevalence of both native and exotic insect pests such as the gypsy moth, woolly adelgid and the emerald ash borer.
