While these critters have been keeping our experts and entomologists at Pestco busy since its formation in 1948, Fayette County has also been invaded by the brown marmorated stinkbug. An invader from Asia in the 1990s, they like computers and heating equipment and although they are harmless to humans, they were recently voted as one of the ten most annoying bugs to invade interiors. Even more, they present a real danger to farm crops because they voraciously consume fruits and vegetables.

Beaver County Historical Pest Trends

In the mid 1700s, the Indian village of Logstown, situated within Beaver County along the banks of the Ohio River, became an important and very busy hub of Indian trade with the French and English. Despite this interaction, it wasn’t until after the native-American defeat at the Battle of Fallen Timbers and General Wayne’s Treaty of Greenville in 1795, that a steady stream of pioneers mostly from England and later from Germany, settled into the territory. Hostilities continued, as many native-Americans refused to honor the agreement stipulated in the treaty. The early settlers were mostly farmers and the new land was very fertile.

The Marauding Corn Borer and Potato Beetle Insects

Farmers eked out a living from the land and grew the same crops that the native Americans relied on for daily sustenance. These included squash, beans and maize. Marauding insects such as the Corn Borer and Potato Beetle threatened these food sources and farmers resorted to natural means to combat them in this age long before the advent of commercial pesticides. Mice and rats also caused significant damage to crops and these rodent scavengers ate anything they could get their teeth around. Mice in particular, loved newly planted seeds, young plants and the seed heads on grain crops.

The Early Use Of Tobacco As A Pesticide

Farmers sometimes grew additional trap crops alongside their real ones in the hopes that insects would leave the others alone. As would be expected, this sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t. They also relied heavily on hungry migratory birds that ate any kind of insect as they traveled from field to crop field. Interestingly enough, tobacco was found to be an effective early pesticide that farmers embraced whenever possible.

The county seat of Beaver was located at the confluence of the Ohio and Beaver Rivers. The area’s many streams provided a source of transportation and small towns began to appear along the riversides. Water mills and improvements in navigation progressed for more than a century from the 1830s to 1936. Several natural rapids and falls along the waterways proved useful as waterpower for mills and factories. Grist and linseed oil mills and a clothes factory also flourished. The area was distinguished for its many natural resources, which included: limestone, fire clay, sandstone, and coal.

Benjamin Franklin once said, “It takes many good deeds to build a reputation and only one bad one to lose it.” We believe the same applies to your business’ online reviews, and pests, germs and bad odors are perfectly content to revel in their bad deed of taking down your good name and any chance of your business' sustained financial longevity.
